It reveals a distinctive character of the Chinese Internet sectors. The Big 3 search engines- Google, Yahoo! and MSN- in global markets do not rank among the top 5 in China. The top 5 companies in China are Tencent, Baidu, SINA, Sohu and NetEase. Most interestingly, the online user are primarily under 30 years of age, and far more mobile- than PC-centric. In addition, the business model of the top two is mainly based on instant messenger (IM) services. Tencent which owns QQ.com dominates nearly 80% of Chinese IM Market, accoding to the data of Analysys International. This also leads to the difference in revenues pattern comparing with its US counterparts. Tencent generated only 13% of its 2007 revenues from online advertising, while Google had 98% of its revenue from online advertising.
